Can you believe we’re already at the final full Moon of this year?!
Whether you’re so ready to be done with 2024, or feeling all kinds of anticipatory ways for all that’s coming in 2025, the Gemini full Moon on December 15th, encourages us to quiet the noise of distraction, shake off our confusion and remember the empowerment available to us through personal discernment and choice.
This lunation brings a golden opportunity to let go of what disempowers us—whether it’s outdated beliefs, external noise, or even habits of overthinking. Under this full Moon, we are called to sift through the mental clutter, distinguish between distraction and alignment, and illuminate the areas where confusion has kept us from our truth.

Gemini’s dual nature
As the mutable air sign Gemini, is known for their vibrant, upbeat, social and communicative natures. Gemini energy is endlessly curious, eager to learn and adapt to new ideas and experiences.
Ruled by Mercury, Gemini excels at weaving connections between people and ideas. Their gift for clear, engaging communication helps create bridges where division might otherwise exist (and that certainly is needed greatly these days!). Interestingly, Mercury also stations direct on the same day as this Gemini full Moon, but more on that below…
The same curiosity that drives Gemini’s light side can veer into scattered energy and an inability to focus. With so many interests and ideas, Gemini energy can feel stretched thin and lose clarity. In its shadow, Gemini energy may avoid diving deep into any one thing, preferring instead to skim the surface. This can lead to indecision or reliance on external validation rather than inner discernment.
Yet under this full Moon, our inner discernment is exactly what’s being called upon.
The Power of our Discernment
On the personal level, this Gemini full Moon encourages us to use the power of our discernment on our own mental energy. Are we using our mental energy to connect meaningfully and explore with purpose? Or are we caught in loops of distraction, overthinking, or information overload?
On the more collective level, this lunation encourages us to remember the power that resides within each of our choices, the power of our free will. And with Pluto moving into Aquarius just a month before this lunation, we are also seeing the collective remember the power the people have to choose as well. This lunation especially wants us to use the power of discernment and choice when it comes to media consumption, and our communications of all kinds.
With the Sun in Sagittarius shining upon the Moon in Gemini, a dynamic dance arises between expansive vision (Sagittarius) and detailed focus (Gemini). This lunation encourages us to anchor and root ourselves into our own inner knowing amidst the swirly sea of possibilities, distractions and decisions occurring around and for us.
Mercury Stations Direct
In an astrologically poetic twist, Mercury—the ruler of Gemini—stations direct on the very same day as this Full Moon. Mercury’s retrograde journey through Sagittarius over the last few weeks has likely stirred up confusion around big-picture thinking, plans, or the stories we tell ourselves. As Mercury goes direct, clarity starts to emerge, helping us organize and understand what may have previously seemed scattered.
This synchronicity amplifies the Gemini Full Moon’s theme of discernment. This Moon may have us asking ourselves were we may be relying too much on external opinions, along with, illuminating the patterns of distraction keeping us from owning our inner authority. As Mercury steadies with the illumination of this Gemini Full Moon, we can anchor into the truth that resonates most deeply within us and use that awareness to make empowered choices.
While Mercury’s forward momentum inspires our own, we may also feel a slow down of our motivation, because we’ll also be feeling Mars Retrograde for the first time in a couple of years.
Mars Retrograde
Adding complexity to this Full Moon is Mars, currently retrograde in Leo. Mars retrograde is a time to review how we assert ourselves, use our energy, and pursue our desires. Retrogrades often turn the energy inward, asking us to reassess whether our actions are aligned with our authentic goals. (Mars stationed retrograde on December 6th, 2024 and will remain retrograde until February 23rd, 2025).
Mars in Leo typically inspires bold self-expression, but in retrograde motion, it may feel like our confidence is in slow motion or we’re second-guessing our moves. Instead of rushing forward, this is a moment to examine where we’ve been burning energy in ways that don’t serve us.
While Mar’s retrograde journey may block our motivation and inner drive a bit, it couldn’t come at a more aligned time than late Autumn’s roll into Winter, when all of Nature asks us to slow down and rest more.
So follow your body’s guidance around this Full Moon - trust when you feel guided to take action and when you feel guided to rest and reflect more. Both of these options move us forward, when done with authentic discernment.
