Blessings and Lessons during a Global Pandemic
Hello Dear Friends,
I wanted to send you all a note of love and connection during these very interesting times. I hope you are all healthy and well, feeling safe and secure with the support of those you love. As the whole world is dealing with a pandemic I find it important to reflect on that which Ecology and Spiritually have always taught us to be true - we are all interconnected on this amazing planet.
As a collective we are dealing with a lot of uncertainty right now, and uncertainty brings up fear. It is very easy to fall into fear with a virus like this spreading around the world, and rightly so, yet I hope I can balance some of that out with some optimism I feel in the face of this challenge. I am so touched by the many signs of solidarity I see spreading across the world - from neighbors serenading each other from their windows and balconies, to those reaching out to neighbors to offer support and assistance, to all of us who have chosen to self isolate ourselves and our families out of love for the greater good, to of course the amazing healthcare workers, grocery and pharmacy workers, food producers and the scientists working tirelessly to help others and find a cure. As Mr. Rodgers famously said "...Always look for the helpers".
I see much of this time as a SACRED PAUSE - a time for us to slow down, hunker in and really get present and focused with the lack of all the busyness that typically rules our days. I know this time right now feels so weird - as we try to hold onto some source of normalcy as we speedily take almost our entire lives online. I invite you now to lower your expectations for yourself in terms of productivity - it’s ok to not need to get as much done right now. It’s ok to take one day at a time and one moment at a time right now. It’s ok to excuse ourselves and step off the hamster wheel of productivity during this novel time.
Personally I am taking time over these weeks to connect, to play with my family, work on my next book (which is all about the health & wellness benefits of living and working with plants - couldn't be more timely!) and loads of gardening. I think it is safe to say we have all experienced feelings of overwhelm and stress so persistent in our society. So take a few moments to turn off the media, get present in your body, and just breathe in the space that has just entered all of our lives. We get to choose what we fill this space with - personally I am choosing to fill it with connecting, learning, creating and just being.
I also believe this is a SACRED PAUSE for our beloved Earth. The halting of much of business as normal actually means far less pollution streaming into the air, water and the Earth. It's kind of like a massive spring cleaning on a Global scale. And in the course a few short weeks time, the healing on Earth is already apparent!
air pollution in China fell over 40% during COVOID-19 restrictions!
Greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector are down all over the world.
The canals of Venice are now so clear you can see the fish swimming within it!
While what we are all currently living through is frightening and anxiety producing, I do aIso see many many blessings that can arise from this global pandemic. Personally, I don’t want to go back to our old ways of normal - “business as usual” - once we emerge from our self-isolation in a few weeks/months. I want to see us as a collective figure out issues we have been dancing around for decades. This is a massive global opportunity for great and needed change! Imagine for a moment coming through this with major advances in ecological sustainability, universal health care, advancing workers right and prioritizing education. It is truly all possible for us in this moment, yet we must all do our part to keep the mortalities down and hold this vision for a better future, a New World to emerge. We can do this by first and foremost choosing to stay home as much as possible right now! Stay home in love for the collective good. Stay home for your elderly and immunocompromised neighbors, for the healthcare workers and those in the food production and distribution industries who are so vitally needed right now. Stay home not in fear but in love for the greater good! I am right there with you all, snuggled in contently with my family, making the best of it and always always looking for the lessons and the blessings.
With gratitude & appreciation,
Rachael
